ASME B32.2-1969 pdf - Preferred Diameters for Round Wire (0.500 Inches and Under)
The USA Standards Committee B32 was established on November 27, 1928, with the task of addressing the unification of diverse systems used for gauging wire and sheet metal. Despite extended periods of inactivity, USAS Standard B32.1, which outlines Preferred Thicknesses for Uncoated Thin Flat Metals, was issued in 1941. The standard was revised in 1952 and reaffirmed in 1959, followed by another reaffirmation in 1966.
A proposal to standardize round wire sizes and replace arbitrary (gage) numbers, aiming to eliminate the complexity of multiple gauges for different metals, was presented in September 1941. However, this proposal never underwent a voting process. There was no subsequent activity until October 25, 1965, when it was agreed to revisit the standardization of a series of sizes for general-purpose round wire. The outcome was a proposal encompassing sizes ranging from 0.010 to 0.500 inches in diameter.
